Michihiro Matsuo's Gap: A Masterpiece of Residential Architecture

Gap's design inspiration stems from the client's desire for a bright, open living space. Matsuo took into account the angle of the sun and the site's shape to create a three-dimensional diagonal line within the structure. This approach not only secures light and visual expanse in the living area but also adds depth and change to the space, fostering a new sense of distance and communication among the residents.

What sets Gap apart from other residential designs is its simple yet profound exterior that belies a complex interior. The south-facing space is angled to maximize natural light, while the different angles and heights within the house create a three-dimensional diagonal line. This unexpected interior design gives the space depth and variety, creating a unique living experience for the residents.

The realization of Gap's design was a feat of engineering. Matsuo used a wooden structure, common in Japan, for its insulation and durability. The complex spatial composition was made possible through structural analysis, using large-section laminated wood and metal joints to ensure the building's strength and safety, particularly in earthquake-prone Japan.

Gap's technical specifications include a site area of 333.32 square meters and a size of 263.28 square meters. The two-story timber structure was designed with a low-carbon society in mind, using precise structural analysis to create large spaces and openings. The house is located in Hyogo, Japan, and was completed in March 2021.

Gap's design process involved extensive research, particularly in energy consumption. Matsuo aimed to create a zero-energy house by improving the building's outer skin and insulation performance, using sunlight and high-performance air conditioners. Regular temperature measurements and third-party visits were conducted to gather data and feedback.

Despite the challenges of designing in a densely populated area, securing renewable energy, and ensuring the residents' privacy, Matsuo successfully met the low-carbon demand required for wooden structures. He created a design with high openness, all while ensuring the strength to withstand frequent large earthquakes, a common concern in Japan.
